Is This Key Genuine?

Genuine key. Your Windows Server 2022 Standard key activates on official servers. Covered by our activation guarantee.

  • 1 x Windows Server 2022 Standard product key in the standard 25-character format, activating one Windows Server 2022 Standard installation in Desktop Experience or Server Core mode.
  • Instant automated email delivery after payment, with the key also retained on your account order page.
  • Step-by-step activation guide for the Settings interface and for the slmgr /ipk and slmgr /ato command line, which is the only method on Server Core.
  • Enables the 2022 security stack in Standard: secured-core server on certified hardware, TLS 1.3 on by default, AES-256 SMB encryption, AES-128-GMAC SMB signing and SMB compression.
  • Two Hyper-V virtual machine rights per fully core-licensed host, plus unlimited Windows Server containers, with nested virtualization now available on AMD hosts as well as Intel.
  • Access to the higher 2022 platform ceilings of 48 TB RAM and 2,048 logical processors, versus 24 TB on Windows Server 2019.
  • Perpetual license — a single purchase with no renewal, no subscription and no cloud tenant requirement.
  • Security updates through October 14, 2031, the longest remaining runway of any Windows Server release before 2025.
  • Core licensing assumption: priced at the 16-core floor. On the dense two-socket hardware 2022 targets, 2 x 20 cores means 40 core licenses, not 16.
  • Not included: Windows Server 2022 CALs and RDS CALs, both licensed separately by Microsoft and both stocked on this store.
  • Licensing model: per physical core, with all cores in the server licensed. The documented minimums are 8 core licenses per physical processor and 16 core licenses per server; licenses are sold in 2-core and 16-core packs.
  • Virtualization rights: two operating system environments (two Hyper-V virtual machines) per fully licensed server. If both are used, the host installation is limited to running and managing Hyper-V. Additional pairs of virtual machines require the full core count to be licensed again.
  • Client access licenses: one Windows Server 2022 CAL or newer per connecting user or device. 2019 and earlier CALs are not valid against a 2022 server. Remote Desktop Services requires RDS CALs in addition to the Windows Server CAL.
  • Processor: 1.4 GHz 64-bit x64 with SLAT and the usual NX/DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF and PrefetchW instructions. Secured-core additionally wants DRTM-capable firmware and an IOMMU.
  • Memory and scale: 1 GB minimum for Server Core, 2 GB for Desktop Experience. Windows Server 2022 raises the platform ceilings to 48 TB of RAM and 2,048 logical processors, double the memory limit of 2019.
  • Storage: 32 GB minimum system disk, plus capacity for the page file, dumps and installed roles.
  • Secured-core requirements: TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, DMA protection and virtualization-based security support, on hardware certified by the OEM as secured-core. Without certified hardware the license still installs, but the secured-core baseline cannot be fully enabled.
  • Security defaults: TLS 1.3 enabled by default for HTTPS, AES-256-GCM and AES-256-CCM SMB encryption, AES-128-GMAC SMB signing and SMB compression. Older clients that only negotiate TLS 1.0 or 1.1 may need explicit configuration.
  • Not available in this edition: SMB over QUIC and hotpatching are limited to Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition, where hotpatching is a fully supported production feature on Server Core. Storage Spaces Direct, Shielded VM hosting and software-defined networking remain Datacenter features.
  • Upgrade path: in-place upgrade supported from Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019, edition-for-edition. Standard can be upgraded to Datacenter on the same hardware; the reverse is not supported.
  • Support lifecycle: mainstream support ends October 13, 2026; extended support with security updates continues to October 14, 2031.
  • Downgrade rights: edition-for-edition downgrade to Windows Server 2019 or 2016 is permitted under Microsoft's Product Terms, using that version's own media and activation method. This key activates Windows Server 2022 Standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Secured-core server is the hardware and firmware security baseline introduced with 2022, and it is available in Standard. On certified hardware it combines TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, System Guard firmware protection, virtualization-based security, hypervisor-enforced code integrity and Credential Guard, all toggled from Windows Admin Center. It requires OEM secured-core certified hardware, not merely the license.

TLS 1.3 is enabled by default for HTTPS connections in Windows Server 2022, and SMB gains AES-256-GCM and AES-256-CCM encryption alongside AES-128-GMAC signing. SMB compression is also new here, shortening large file transfers over constrained links. These are platform capabilities present in the Standard edition, not Datacenter-only extras.

No. In the 2022 generation SMB over QUIC is exclusive to Azure Edition, so a Standard license running on your own hardware does not enable it. If you specifically need SMB tunneled over UDP port 443 without a VPN, Windows Server 2025 is the version that brought that feature to both Standard and Datacenter.

Count the physical cores in both sockets and license every one of them. The floor is 8 core licenses per processor and 16 per server, so a two-socket machine with 6 cores per socket still needs 16 core licenses. A two-socket machine with 20 cores per socket needs 40. Packs come in twos and sixteens.

Mainstream support ends October 13, 2026, and extended support, which continues to deliver security updates, runs to October 14, 2031. That five-year security runway after the mainstream phase is a common reason buyers choose 2022 over 2019, whose extended phase closes in January 2029.

Three licenses stack. The Windows Server 2022 Standard key covers the operating system itself. Every user or device that connects to the server also needs a Windows Server CAL. On top of that, each user or device running a Remote Desktop session needs an RDS CAL. RDS CALs come in User and Device forms and are sold separately.
