Best for: Home users on older hardware who want a transferable license and don’t need Pro features.
Retail vs OEM:
Retail means the license follows you, not the hardware. Buy a new PC in two years — transfer your license at no extra cost. OEM is cheaper but locks the license to one machine forever.
Home vs Pro:
Home includes everything for everyday computing: Office, gaming, streaming, video calls, Microsoft Store. Pro adds business tools — BitLocker, Remote Desktop, domain join, Hyper-V. Most home users never use those. If you’re not sure, you probably need Home.
Windows 10 vs 11?
Windows 10 support ended October 2025 (no more security updates). Windows 10 Home Retail makes sense if your machine can’t run Windows 11 and you want the flexibility to move the license later.
What’s included:
- Full Windows 10 Home experience
- Windows Hello biometric login
- Microsoft Store, gaming features, Microsoft Edge
