Best for: Anyone who wants the most future-proof Windows license — transferable, with the full Pro feature set.
Retail vs OEM:
This key moves with you. Upgrade to a new PC — transfer your license, no repurchase needed. OEM is cheaper but permanently locked to the first machine it activates on. If you plan to upgrade hardware in the next few years, Retail pays for itself.
Do you actually need Pro or is Home enough?
Pro is worth it if you:
- Travel with a laptop and want BitLocker to protect your data if it’s stolen
- Need Remote Desktop to access your PC from another location
- Connect to a company or school domain network
- Run virtual machines with Hyper-V
If none of those apply, Home does everything you need at a lower price.
What Pro adds:
- BitLocker — full-disk encryption to protect your data if your device is stolen
- Remote Desktop — access or share your PC remotely
- Domain and Azure AD join — for business and enterprise environments
- Hyper-V — run virtual machines locally
- Windows Sandbox — test software in an isolated environment
- Group Policy management
