Licensing model: per physical core, unchanged from 2016 onward. All cores in the server must be licensed, with minimums of 8 core licenses per physical processor and 16 core licenses per server. Core licenses are sold in 2-core and 16-core packs.
Virtualization rights: two operating system environments (two Hyper-V virtual machines) per fully licensed server, which is what separates Standard from Datacenter's unlimited entitlement. Using both VM rights restricts the host to Hyper-V and management. Further pairs require re-licensing every physical core.
Client access licenses: Windows Server 2025 CALs are mandatory for a 2025 server; 2022 and earlier CALs are not valid against it. Remote Desktop Services requires 2025 RDS CALs in addition to the Windows Server CAL.
Processor: 1.4 GHz 64-bit x64 with SLAT, NX/DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF and PrefetchW. 2025 adds a cluster-level constraint: dynamic processor compatibility mode needs nodes sharing one CPU vendor.
Memory and virtual machine scale: 2 GB minimum for Server Core and 2 GB for Desktop Experience, with 4 GB recommended. Hyper-V in 2025 supports individual virtual machines with up to 240 TB of memory and 2,048 virtual processors, far beyond the 2022 guest limits.
Storage: 32 GB minimum system disk. ReFS in this release adds native deduplication and compression, and NVMe throughput is substantially improved over 2022.
Hotpatching prerequisites: the server must be connected to Azure Arc and have Hotpatch enabled there; since May 2026 it carries no extra cost, but it is still not enabled by this key alone, as Arc onboarding is required.
Security defaults that may need planning: SMB signing is now required by default for all outbound client connections (inbound server signing is unchanged), and the SMB client can be configured to block NTLM, though that blocking is opt-in. Legacy NAS devices and older clients may need explicit configuration.
Active Directory: a new 2025 domain and forest functional level is available, the first since 2016. It enables the optional 32k database page size and delegated Managed Service Accounts, and requires every domain controller to run Windows Server 2025.
Still Datacenter-only: unlimited virtualization, Storage Spaces Direct, Shielded VM hosting and software-defined networking are not enabled by a Standard license.
Upgrade path: in-place upgrade supported from Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 and 2022, edition-for-edition (nonclustered servers may jump up to four versions). Standard can be upgraded to Datacenter on the same hardware; the reverse is not supported.
Support lifecycle: mainstream support runs to November 13, 2029, with extended support to November 14, 2034 — the longest coverage window of any current Windows Server release.
Downgrade rights: edition-for-edition downgrade to Windows Server 2022, 2019 or 2016 is permitted under Microsoft's Product Terms, using that version's own media and activation method. This key activates Windows Server 2025 Standard.

Hotpatching applies most monthly security fixes to a running server without a restart, cutting reboots to roughly a quarterly cadence. Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter can use it, but not from the operating system license alone: the machine must be connected to Azure Arc and have Hotpatch switched on there. Microsoft made Arc-enabled hotpatching for Windows Server 2025 free in May 2026, so there is no longer a per-core charge.

Yes. This is the release where SMB over QUIC moved out of Azure Edition and became available in both Standard and Datacenter. It carries SMB inside TLS 1.3 over UDP port 443, so remote and branch clients can reach a file server across the internet without a VPN and without exposing TCP port 445.

GPU partitioning, or GPU-P, divides a supported physical GPU into isolated fractions and assigns them to separate Hyper-V virtual machines, replacing the all-or-nothing discrete device assignment model. Windows Server 2025 Standard also supports live migration of virtual machines using a partitioned GPU between standalone hosts; clustered GPU-P with automatic failover requires Datacenter. It requires vendor drivers and hardware that expose partitioning.

Raising a domain or forest to the 2025 level unlocks the optional 32k Active Directory database page size, improved LDAP encryption, and delegated Managed Service Accounts that remove shared service account passwords. Every domain controller must be running 2025 before the level can be raised.

No. A client access license must match or exceed the server version, so a Windows Server 2025 machine needs Windows Server 2025 CALs for every connecting user or device. Existing 2019 or 2022 CALs stay valid against their own servers but not against this one. Remote Desktop users additionally need 2025 RDS CALs.

In-place upgrade is supported from Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 and 2022, edition-for-edition, so a 2019 Standard server becomes 2025 Standard with roles and data intact. 2025 is the first release allowing a four-version jump; anything older than 2012 R2 must be migrated. Check backup agents, antivirus and line-of-business applications for 2025 support before you start.
